  • Overview

TransportationDiscover Video provides a wide range of video products and services for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).  The DV products enhance current highway traffic systems by allowing the Department of Transportation in various states to deliver traffic video to a variety of locations and devices.   For example, a high quality live video stream from a highway camera can be converted to iPhone, iPad, Blackberry, or Android compatible in real-time.   The resulting high quality, but low bandwidth streams can be sent to first responders, adjacent monitoring locations, and the public.

    Discover Video transportation solutions:

    • Transcoding live MPEG streams to H.264 Flash and mobile/tablet compatible streams
    • Capturing JPEG images from live streams for review and recording
    • Inexpensive software decoders for displaying multiple highway traffic video streams on monitors
    • Adding logo or text images to live video streams
    • Internet distribution of live camera video to thousands of viewers
    • Hardware and software H.264 encoders for delivering  high quality video over IP networks
    • Live 3G/4G cellular streaming – first responders

  • Case Study: Delivering Live Traffic Video to PCs, Macs, and Mobile

    Florida Department of TransportationChallenge:
The Florida Department of Transportation had hundreds of high quality video streams from cameras on various Florida highways.   The MPEG video was decoded at the Traffic Management Centers (TMC) and displayed on large monitors.   The video streams from the cameras were transported over fiber using high bit rates to preserve the quality.  The FL DOT needed to deliver the traffic video beyond the local TMC to first responders, adjacent TMCs, and in some cases the public.   The existing MPEG video streams were at a high bit rate and could not be delivered over the Internet.

    Solution:
Discover Video provided the Florida DOT the DV live H.264 Flash transcoder (DVT) and media server.   It allowed the Florida DOT to convert any live traffic camera video stream (MPEG) to a lower bit rate H.264 Flash stream.   Once converted, these streams could be delivered over wired and wireless networks to anyone, on any viewing device.   The combination of the DVT and media server allowed the Florida DOT to leverage the current highway equipment (encoders) and infrastructure and achieve its video distribution goals.

  • Case Study: Displaying Multiple Highway Camera Videos on One Screen

    Florida Department of TransportationChallenge:
The Florida Department of Transportation had numerous videos streamed to its Traffic Management Center for monitoring.   Each camera video was displayed on a single monitor, which required the TMC to have a large number of monitors and continually switch feeds.   There was no way to have multiple camera videos on one monitor.

    Solution:
Discover Video provided the Florida DOT its Soft Top Box (STB) decoder for viewing multiple camera video streams on one PC or TV monitor.   The STB decoder accepted the multicast MPEG streams and allowed the user to choose which streams to display.   Multiple streams could be displayed (Hollywood squares style) making it easier and more efficient to monitor and react to traffic conditions.   The Florida DOT also saved money by reducing the number of hardware decoders it had to purchase.
