Case Study: Delivering live and on-demand video of track meets

Challenge:
The New York Armory holds hundreds of events every year at its facility.  Most are track and field events involving local and national high school participants.   The events last from 2 to 6 hours.   NY Armory contacted Discover Video for a live streaming and on-demand video solution.  The equipment had to deliver high quality video to thousands of simultaneous viewers worldwide.   In addition, the recorded video had to be partitioned into sections based on the event.  For example, the viewers should be able to click and watch the men’s 100 yard sprint without having to see the entire meet or have to search with the fast forward/reverse buttons.

Solution:
Discover Video provided the New York Armory a complete system for live streaming and video-on-demand.   The DVME provides the NY Armory a flexible encoding/streaming system that can deliver live H.264 Flash or Windows Media streams.  It permits the NY Armory to adjust the bit rate, resolution, and frame rate in order to send the highest quality on the Internet.   

The DVME software encoder is also used to record every track meet.  With the DV Video Publisher the NY Armory segments the recorded track meets into small chapters.  Each event can be viewed independently.    Viewers just click on the event of interest and watch it in a customized viewing window or full screen.   Also, Discover Video provides full live and on-demand streaming and video storage services to the NY Armory.

Case Study: Delivering baseball games live on community TV

Challenge:
Wareham TV (MA) wanted to broadcast local Cape Cod league baseball games live on its community TV station. The ball park is several miles from the TV studio. Wareham TV wanted to leverage its town wide radio communications system to deliver the remote feeds from the ball park to the station.

Solution:
Discover Video provided Wareham TV a mobile broadcast kit consisting of the DVME software encoder and Soft Top Box decoder. The DVME software on a PC laptop encodes and streams the feed from a camera switcher at the ball park over the town wide radio system. The Soft Top Box decoder (on a mini PC) receives the live video/audio stream and decodes back to NTSC full screen/full motion analog video. It is then fed into the cable modulator and broadcast on the community TV station. Both the DVME encoder and Soft Top Box decoder can be remotely controlled through a web interface permitting Wareham TV to start and stop the broadcasts from any location.

Case Study: Webcasting Football over Cellular 4G

Challenge:
Wethersfield High School and Wethersfield Community Television wanted to deliver the annual Thanksgiving Day football game live to viewers on TVs, PCs, Macs, and mobile devices.   In the past they were able to use a cable modulator to deliver the game on cable.   The modulator wore out and it was too costly to replace it.   Wethersfield came to Discover Video for a streaming solution.

Solution:
Discover Video provided Wethersfield with a mobile broadcasting kit consisting of the DVME software encoder and the DV Soft Top Box decoder.    The DVME software (loaded on a laptop PC) was used to stream the video/audio from the camera and microphone over a Verizon Cellular 4G network.   With the ample 4G bandwidth, Wethersfield was able to stream the game in full motion (30fps) and full standard resolution (640 x480) to viewers on PCs, Macs, iPads, iPhones, Androids, etc.   In addition, the stream was captured at the Wethersfield Community TV station with the Discover Video Soft Top Box decoder and broadcast live on Cox Cable and AT&T U-verse on the Wethersfield Community TV channel.
