Case Study: Distributing live and on-demand video for classroom viewing |
Challenge:
Beacon City Schools, NY, had most of their video learning materials on DVDs and VHS tapes. Teachers would obtain the DVDs or VHS tapes from the library and play them on the DVD players or VCRs in their classroom. In addition, morning announcements were provided on the PA system. The Beacon schools wanted to eliminate the DVDs and VHS tapes and provide live and on-demand video to classrooms.
Solution:
Discover Video provided a VBrick Video Enterprise Management System (VEMS) with VBrick encoders and decoders. The video network also included a VBrick Video on Demand server. Now, all of the video assets reside on the Video on Demand server and can be displayed in classrooms on PCs or projectors. Teachers can locate and play any education video in seconds. In addition, the school is using the VBrick encoders for live distribution of video – morning announcements to each classroom. The live and on-demand video can be multicast, thereby preserving network bandwidth. The new system reduced costs by eliminating the cost issues of lost or damaged DVDs/VHS tapes, and upkeep of DVD players and VCRs.
